The grandeur of Palazzo Zito overwhelms you. Its imposing facade hints at centuries of history. This isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to Palermo’s rich past.

Palazzo Zito began as a large semirural house owned by Gaspare Scicli in the early 18th century. A chapel with exquisite decorations was added in 1762. Imagine the artisans painstakingly creating the intricate details. The palace later passed to the Prince of Carini. He sold the property in 1909. The merchant Francesco Zito Scalici bought the palace. He transformed it. He employed architect Michele La Cavera. The result was a stunning Neo-Renaissance masterpiece. The building was expanded and updated. Its elegance reflects the tastes of a bygone era.

During the 1920s the Banco di Sicilia acquired Palazzo Zito. Ignazio Mormino the bank’s director general established a museum here. He showcased his vast collection of Sicilian archaeology. The museum was known as the Museo Mormino. Unfortunately these artifacts moved to the Palazzo Branciforte by 2015. Their absence is felt. The building’s character remains though.

In 1983 Palazzo Zito became an exhibition hall. It was the home of the Fondazione Banco di Sicilia’s collection. The foundation later changed its name to Fondazione Sicilia. Since 2005 this foundation has managed the collections. They employ architect Corrado Anselmi to improve the gallery. His work continues to shape the visitor experience.

Today the Pinacoteca Villa Zito boasts a remarkable collection. Masterpieces from various centuries are on display. Artists such as Bernardo Strozzi Mattia Preti Luca Giordano Salvator Rosa and many more are represented. The artwork spans from the 17th to the early 20th century. It offers a breathtaking survey of Sicilian and Italian art.
