How did a family from San Miniato leave their mark on Florence? Well, let me tell you the story of this very Palazzo, the Palazzo Roffia. In 1646, the Roffia family, originally from San Miniato al Tedesco, purchased a house here in Borgo Pinti. They were ambitious and eager to establish themselves in the heart of Florence. This wasn’t just any purchase, it was their first step towards creating a legacy. Their initial expansions in 1665 focused on the back, creating new rooms and reducing the garden area. Then, in 1672, they acquired a neighboring house, further solidifying their presence. However, the defining moment came in 1696. Antonio Roffia, a man with a passion for architecture, took charge. Under his guidance and with the help of Michele Magni, a student of the renowned Giovanni Battista Foggini, the Palazzo Roffia as we see it today was born. Look closely at the facade. It’s a blend of traditional 16th-century Florentine design with a unique twist. Notice the wrought iron balcony? It was quite unusual for Florence at the time, a subtle hint of wider Italian trends finding a place in this city. Critics at the time might have called it a sign of “decadence,” but I see it as a touch of individuality. Inside, the Palazzo holds even more stories. The Roffia family commissioned some of the most talented artists of their time to adorn its walls and ceilings. Today, some of these rooms, adorned with frescoes depicting scenes from mythology and grand allegories, serve as Masonic temples, used by the Grand Lodge of Italy. The Palazzo Roffia is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to the ambition and legacy of a family who came to Florence and made their mark on its history.
