Intriguingly, Palazzo Mozzanica wasn’t always a single structure. It began life in the 15th century. Count Lorenzo Mozzanica envisioned a grand palace. He built upon the existing foundations of several 14th-century buildings. These likely belonged to Giovanni Vignati, a former lord of Lodi. Palazzo Mozzanica stands as a testament to Mozzanica’s vision. He oversaw the expansion of the original Gothic structure. He also commissioned its transformation into the Renaissance masterpiece we see today. The architect, Giovanni Battagio, also known as Giovanni da Lodi, likely managed the project. Battagio was simultaneously working on Lodi’s Incoronata Temple. Palazzo Mozzanica’s design revolves around a rectangular interior courtyard. This courtyard features two arcaded sides. These arcades have columns with Ionic capitals. An 18th-century grand staircase closes off the bottom of the courtyard. The street facade is a blend of Bramante and Renaissance influences. It’s divided into two orders separated by a carved terracotta frieze. This frieze showcases garlands and mythological figures. Agostino de Fondulis is credited with the decorative work. He also contributed to the Incoronata Church in Lodi. The facade’s lower order features a high brick base with five splayed windows. An off-center door adds a touch of asymmetry. The upper order boasts arched windows framed by ogival terracotta motifs. These elements contribute to the facade’s unique, slightly irregular charm. A large marble coat of arms adorns the corner of Palazzo Mozzanica. The Angera stone portal is shifted to the left. It’s flanked by candelabra columns and decorated with floral bas-reliefs. Four ancient-style medallions add a touch of history. These medallions depict profiles that confirm the building’s age. They also allude to Lorenzo Mozzanica’s influential role. Four Sforza medals further embellish the entrance. Palazzo Mozzanica even hosted royalty. In 1509, King Francis I of France stayed within its walls.
