Of citrus and spices! Does that pique your interest? It should. We’re standing before Palazzo Jung. It is a testament to Palermo’s vibrant past.

Palazzo Jung stands on Via Lincoln. It faces the Orto Botanico of Palermo. This neoclassical palace has a rich history.

In the late 18th century, the Baron of Verbumcaudo began construction. The site was cleared after the city walls came down. For a time, the Pensione Tersenghi occupied part of the palace.

The Jung brothers purchased Palazzo Jung in 1921. Mario, Guido, and Ugo were Jewish merchants from Switzerland. They built a company that exported dried fruits. They also exported citrus products and spices.

Palazzo Jung suffered damage during World War II. The Jung family owned it until 1958.

Later, the provincial government acquired the poorly conserved property. It became the Istituto Alberghiero di Stato. The interiors boast elegant neoclassical frescoes. The gardens were also restored.

One notable Jung was Guido Jung. Born in 1876, he was a member of the fascist party. He served as minister of finance for Mussolini. He also briefly served in Badoglio’s government. Guido was a colonel in the Italian army in Ethiopia. Despite converting to Catholicism in 1935, he was dismissed from the army in 1939. This was due to Italian racial laws.

The palace reflects the entrepreneurial spirit. It also reflects the needs of the new capitalist class. They helped revive Sicilian commerce and finance.

The building features neoclassical elements. Thin columns adorn the entrance frontispiece. The balconies also showcase this style.

Acquired by the Province of Palermo in 1959, Palazzo Jung underwent a restoration. The restoration covered approximately 6,000 square meters. This included the ground floor, first and second floors, and mezzanines. The beautiful garden was also part of the project.

Today, Palazzo Jung hosts temporary exhibitions and events. The palace has been returned to public enjoyment.

So, as you explore Palazzo Jung, remember its journey. From baronial residence to family business hub. From wartime damage to restored beauty. Palazzo Jung remains a symbol of Palermo’s enduring spirit. It is a place where history and culture intertwine.
