Stand before Palazzo Greppi, in Milan, and it feels as if history gently whispers its stories through the stone. This grand building, designed by the renowned Giuseppe Piermarini, holds a treasure trove of tales waiting to be unveiled. The facade may appear austere, but it is a testament to the neoclassical style so prevalent in 18th century Milan.

This structure is a masterpiece of the neoclassical movement. It was commissioned by the Conte Antonio Greppi, a influential figure in Milanese finance during the reign of the Hapsburgs. The story goes that he wanted to impress the city with his wealth and status, so he hired the most famous neoclassical architect in Milan, Piermarini.

The entrance is a grand portal flanked by Tuscan columns leading to a porticoed courtyard. Imagine the clatter of horses’ hooves as carriages rolled through the courtyard. The building is on three levels. Notice the subtly projecting central section with the ornate balcony above the main entrance. It was a testament to the wealth of the Greppi family, a symbol of their power and influence.

Stepping inside, you’re transported back to that era of elegance and sophistication. The grand ballroom, a magnificent space illuminated by an elaborate chandelier, is where Milan’s elite once waltzed the nights away. Its beauty reflects the lavish tastes of the Greppi family. The ceilings boast elegant, intricate stuccos, a reminder of the artistry of Giocondo Albertolli, Andrea Appiani and Martin Knoller.

The Sala di Giove, or Jupiter’s Hall, is another treasure. The masterpiece here is a fresco depicting Jupiter and Ganymede that was painted towards the end of the 18th century by the artist Andrea Appiani. Imagine the stories that must have been told here!

Today, the building is used by the University of Milan.
