“A neoclassical masterpiece,” Count Febo Borromeo d’Adda declared, gazing at his newly completed palazzo in 1825. The piano nobile, with its alternating curved and triangular tympanums above the windows, hints at the elegance within. The interior of Palazzo Borromeo d’Adda boasts two courtyards, one a tranquil garden escape. A monumental staircase, marked by barrel vault and Ionic pilasters, sweeps upwards. It’s easy to picture the count ascending these stairs, perhaps hosting a salon for Milan’s intellectual elite. Even the famed French author Stendhal was captivated by Palazzo Borromeo d’Adda. He described his visit in his chronicles, noting his “thunderbolt” moment of awe for the architecture. Stendhal was fascinated by the courtyard and the “superb flight of steps”. He wrote, “I was fascinated, it was the first time architecture had this effect on me.” Palazzo Borromeo d’Adda remains a hidden gem in Milan, a testament to neoclassical elegance and a witness to the city’s rich history.
