Picture this. In 1672 the Barni family acquired buildings adjacent to the Vistarini Palace. They weren’t just any buildings. They were strategic. These structures occupied a prime location along the Corso di Porta Regale now known as Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
Fast forward to 1698. Antonio Barni son of Giovanni Paolo decided to upgrade. He commissioned the renowned architect Domenico Sartorio. The result a magnificent Baroque palace. It stands as a symbol of ambition and wealth. The transformation took until the 1700s. It was a major undertaking.
Palazzo Barni became more than just a residence. It was a stage. Imagine the grandeur. Royal visitors such as King Philip V of Spain Emperor Charles VI and King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia graced its halls. The palazzo’s facade is truly captivating. Note the three portals. The central one is the most striking. It’s topped by a balcony adorned with elegant wrought-iron railings. A distinctive feature of Lodi’s architectural heritage. The land in front of the palace originally belonged to the family. They gave it to the city in 1821. The city expanded the road.
Step inside. Two courtyards lie hidden within. A transverse structure separates them. This structure holds a private chapel. One courtyard is refined the other more rustic. This reflects different uses within the palazzo.
The main staircase is magnificent. Look up. Its vaulted ceiling showcases a breathtaking fresco. Sebastiano Galeotti painted it. It depicts Boreas abducting Orithyia. Another fresco in the main hall features Boreads chasing away Harpies. These mythological scenes add a layer of artistic splendor.
Today Palazzo Barni is undergoing restoration. This is a long-awaited project. Its ground floor houses shops. It is a testament to perseverance and pride in Lodi’s heritage.
