A regal air surrounds us. This is the Palauet Albéniz. More than just a building it breathes history.

Built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition the Palauet Albéniz wasn’t initially a royal residence. It served as a representation of the Royal Household. The royal family used it for light meals and tea. They also received important guests there. The true royal residence during the Exposition was the Royal Palace of Pedralbes.

Designed by Juan Moya Idígoras the architect of the Royal House the Palauet Albéniz stands apart. Unlike other Exposition buildings its style reflects Bourbon tastes and the aesthetics of Royal Sites. It doesn’t follow the Mediterranean and Catalan architectural guidelines. The official inauguration was on October 5 1929 with King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie present.

After the Exposition proposals arose to use the palace for a music museum. That didn’t happen. Instead a bust of musician Isaac Albéniz was placed there. From then on it became known as the Palauet Albéniz. The bust was sculpted by Enric Casanovas and Mateu Fernández Soto.

The Palauet Albéniz remained closed during the Second Republic and Civil War. Later it housed Cardinal Angelo Dell’Acqua. In 1957 Mayor Josep Maria de Porcioles decided to use it for distinguished visitors. These included Prince Constantine of Greece Richard Nixon and others.

From 1965 to 1970 the palace underwent major remodeling. Architects Joaquim Ros de Ramis Antoni Lozoya and Ignasi Serra Goday expanded it. The interior received paintings by prominent Catalan artists. These included Ramon Martí Alsina Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol. The furniture came from the collection of Luis Plandiura. Salvador Dalí painted a dome. Carlos Muñoz de Pablos created a stained glass window.

The demolition of nearby palaces allowed for the expansion of the gardens. They were renamed Joan Maragall gardens. Francisco Franco inaugurated the renovated palace in 1970.

The Palauet Albéniz’s history isn’t just about grand events. It’s about the evolution of Barcelona itself. From Exposition pavilion to royal residence to venue for important guests the Palauet Albéniz continues to serve as a symbol of Barcelona’s rich history. And remember that magnificent dome. A testament to art and royalty. It stands as a silent observer of countless historical moments. A true emblem of Barcelona’s captivating past.
