Imagine stepping back in time to the 17th century. You stand before the Palais Lascaris. It is a noble residence with a grand façade. The Palais Lascaris whispers stories of a rich past.

This palace is a remarkable example of Niçoise civil Baroque style. It was built in 1648. The Lascaris-Vintimille family owned it. They were one of the most important aristocratic families in Nice.

Notice the white marble balconies. They adorn the grand façade. Inside, a grand staircase awaits. Frescoes decorate it. The luxury rooms are also remarkable.

In 1942, the city of Nice acquired the Palais Lascaris. It transformed the palace into a museum. The museum showcases popular art and musical instruments.

Look around. The Palais Lascaris boasts an impressive collection. It includes Baroque art and furniture. Late 17th-century mural paintings depict mythological stories. Flemish tapestries add to the palace’s beauty. You will also find paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

But the musical instruments are the real treasure. The Palais Lascaris houses over 500 ancient musical instruments. This collection is the second largest in France. It is also one of the most important in Europe.

Antoine Gautier, a notable from Nice, bequeathed most of these instruments. Gautier was born in Nice in 1825. He was an amateur musician and collector. He played the violin and viola. In 1903, his quartet celebrated its sixtieth anniversary.

Gautier’s collection includes rare instruments. There is a tenor sackbut by Anton Schnitzer from 1581. Several violas d’amore are present. They are from famous makers like Joannes Florenus Guidanti and Johann Schorn. You can also admire several baroque guitars. One is by Giovanni Tesler from 1618. Another is by René Voboam from around 1650.

The Palais Lascaris collection is constantly growing. The city of Nice has continued to enrich it. The instruments were once displayed at other museums. These include the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nice and the Musée Masséna.

Consider yourself lucky to see this hidden gem. The Palais Lascaris is a cultural treasure. It offers a glimpse into Nice’s aristocratic past. It also celebrates the beauty of music. Take your time. Enjoy the art, the history, and the music within these walls of the Palais Lascaris.
