Built in 1872, the Palais de Marbre stands as a testament to Riviera elegance. It whispers tales of art, gardens, and changing times. The Palais de Marbre, originally known as Villa Les Palmiers, was the brainchild of Ernest Gambard. He was an art dealer who envisioned a space to showcase beauty. He commissioned architect Sebastien Marcel Biasini to design the villa. Biasini, drawing inspiration from the Italian Renaissance and neoclassical styles, crafted a masterpiece. Carrara marble cloaks the building, giving the Palais de Marbre its name. The villa sits within a historic garden. It was originally designed for banker Honore Gastaud in the mid-19th century. Its beauty captivated even Tsarina Alexandra, Napoleon III, and Empress Eugenia. Biasini acquired the garden from the bankrupt Gastaud. He made it an integral part of the Palais de Marbre estate. The garden, with its exotic plants like araucarias, palms, eucalyptus, and cedars, forms a lush backdrop for the marble palace. Over time, the Palais de Marbre has seen a series of owners, each leaving their mark. Fortunately, these alterations have been minimal, preserving the original splendor. Today, the city of Nice owns both the Palais de Marbre and its garden. Since 1963, it has housed the municipal archives. In recognition of its historical significance, the Palais de Marbre and its garden were declared a historical monument in 1993. This designation ensures that this architectural gem will continue to inspire awe and whisper its stories to future generations.
