Was this once a royal residence? Yes it was. Right before you stands the Palais de la Prefecture ancien palais des rois de Sardaigne a building steeped in history. For centuries this magnificent structure served as the residence of the Kings of Sardinia. That is why it is also called the Palais des Rois Sardes. Imagine the grandeur the opulence the lives lived within these walls.

Construction began in the 16th century. King Charles-Emmanuel I of Savoy inaugurated it in 1613. But this wasn’t always the Prefecture. Oh no. Its story is far more layered. During the French Revolution it became a military hospital. Then in 1860 when Nice became part of France the Palais de la Prefecture took on its current role. A significant transformation for a building with such a rich past.

The Palais de la Prefecture underwent numerous changes over the years. In 1814 after the Sardinian restoration King Victor-Emmanuel I decided to elevate the building to a royal residence again. He commissioned architect Jean-Antoine Scoffier to harmonize the facade. He also tasked Scoffier with the reconstruction of the vestibule and the grand staircase. The royal apartments were redecorated with furniture brought from Turin and Gênes. The Kings and Queens lived in high style.

The building continued to evolve. Architect Sabatier expanded it in 1869. He added a new south facade. He also enlarged it towards the east. By 1867 to 1907 the Palais de la Prefecture had largely taken its current shape. A remarkable feat of architectural evolution.

The Palais de la Prefecture is more than just a building. It is a silent witness to centuries of history. It has hosted kings emperors and heads of state. The Treaty of Nice was signed here. General de Gaulle stayed here during the centenary of Nice’s annexation to France. It continues to serve as an important symbol of the region.

Today the Palais de la Prefecture remains a significant landmark. You can admire its beautiful facade and main entrance. However it is only open to the public once a year. That is during the Heritage Days in September. Still its imposing presence speaks volumes about its past and its enduring importance to Nice. The Palais de la Prefecture a testament to time and power. A story etched into stone.
