Palacio Goyeneche

Bishop Juan de Goyeneche y Aguerrevere saw potential amidst the ruins. He purchased the site and commissioned its reconstruction. The Palacio Goyeneche we see today was completed in 1840. It became a symbol of the city’s rebirth. The bishop, a man of refined tastes, filled the Palacio Goyeneche with European art and furniture. He created a haven of culture and sophistication. The bishop lived there with his family for almost two decades, until he moved to Lima in 1858. He had been appointed archbishop. Over the years, the palace changed hands several times. Eventually, it was acquired by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru. Today, the Palacio Goyeneche is a museum. Notice the French influence in its design. The two-story mansion boasts porticoes, spacious patios, and a façade adorned with Doric pilasters. A spiral staircase made of ashlar leads to the second floor. The main patio features a large black stone pool and beautiful colonial windows. Inside, the rooms are crowned by elegant vaults.
