Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Palácio dos Viscondes de Pinhel. This Neo-Gothic gem stands proudly on Rua da Boavista. Its three sections rise two stories high separated by subtle pilasters. A frieze marks the transition between floors.

The Palácio dos Viscondes de Pinhel is more than just a pretty face. It’s a testament to a family’s rise to nobility. Manuel António de Almeida was born in 1860. He later became the first Viscount of Pinhel. In 1888 he was granted this title by King Luís I. He commissioned this palace. The architect was Licínio Queiroz. Construction started in 1889. The building demonstrates a remarkable blend of design elements.

Notice the main facade. The central section features arched doorways on both floors. The upper door leads to a cast-iron balcony. The side sections are symmetrical. They mirror each other beautifully. A high base is adorned with five small windows. Above it a large arch frames two more arched openings. These are replicated on the second floor but without the cast-iron windowsills. A prominent cornice supports the parapet. The parapet features arched openings echoing the design of the building itself. It ends in a curved pediment decorated with a flower. The arches rest on capitals. They’re adorned with varying vegetal motifs.

The west wing also boasts interesting features. It begins with a high base with five more cast-iron grated windows. The first floor houses five arched windows framed in granite. The upper floor matches. The central window opens onto another cast-iron balcony. A granite frieze separates the floors. A less prominent cornice tops the structure. The parapet is embellished with diamonds alternating with balustered arches.

The northern rear wing has been altered. It now has three floors and is set back. A granite wall stretches north from the main building. This is plastered and whitewashed. A two-leaf cast-iron gate is flanked by two columns. A small courtyard lies behind the main building. It is quadrangular in shape. The Palácio dos Viscondes de Pinhel is a building rich in history and architectural charm. It stands as a powerful symbol of a family’s legacy and the city of Porto’s unique architectural heritage. The palace’s rich details speak to its significant past. This is a place where history and beauty intertwine. It’s a true gem.
