Once a prison, now a palace. That’s the story of the Palacio de Santa Cruz. This baroque building stands proudly in central Madrid. Today, it houses the Spanish Foreign Ministry. Quite a transformation, wouldn’t you agree?

The story of the Palacio de Santa Cruz begins in 1629. Philip IV commissioned its construction. The original purpose was to house both courts and jail facilities. Imagine the scene back then. Justice being served and prisoners held within the same walls.

Juan Gómez de Mora, a renowned architect, worked on the project. From 1629 to 1636, he shaped the building’s initial form. Later, other architects added their touches. José de Villareal, Bartolomé Hurtado García, and José del Olmo each contributed elements.

For many years, the Palacio de Santa Cruz served as a jail. Many prisoners awaited their verdict here. Some even faced the Spanish Inquisition. For many the next stop was often execution at the nearby Plaza Mayor. A grim chapter in the palace’s history.

Then, in 1767, everything changed. The jail became the Palacio de Santa Cruz. Its proximity to the church of Santa Cruz influenced this change. A fire in 1791 almost erased the palace. Only the facade survived the flames.

The Palacio de Santa Cruz has been renovated twice. The first time was after the great fire of 1791. The second renovation occurred in 1940. This followed damage during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. It emerged stronger each time.

In 1938, the Palacio de Santa Cruz found its current purpose. It became the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Alberto Martín Artajo inaugurated the new building in 1950. Its present-day characteristics were established then.

The Palacio de Santa Cruz stands as an example of Habsburg architecture. Its rectangular shape and twin-towered design are striking. The red brick adds a distinctive touch. Inside, two symmetrical squares provide ventilation and natural light.

You can appreciate its classic Italian and Spanish influences. It’s a testament to Madrid’s rich architectural history. Although visits inside are not allowed, you can admire the Palacio de Santa Cruz from the outside. Take in its grandeur and imagine the stories within its walls. A former jail now housing diplomacy. The Palacio de Santa Cruz is truly a remarkable building with a captivating past.
