“The American Venus” they called it. A silent film. A grand premiere. Right here at the Palacio de la Música.

The Palacio de la Música isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in marble and memory. A testament to Madrid’s vibrant past. Built in 1926 by architect Secundino Zuazo Ugalde it was initially envisioned as a concert hall. Soon after it transformed into a cinema. Imagine Gone with the Wind gracing its screen.

Construction wasn’t without drama. A roof collapse in 1925 forced a redesign. The accident delayed the opening. But the show must go on. King Alfonso XIII himself graced the opening night in 1926. The very next day the first film The American Venus was shown. The orchestra conducted by maestro Lasalle provided the music.

The Palacio de la Música boasted a magnificent design. Its exterior columns harkened back to Italian palaces. Inside an ornate auditorium awaited moviegoers. A massive screen a huge backlit grill and a stunning dome captivated audiences. The seating capacity was impressive 1868 people spread across stalls and balconies.

The cinema wasn’t just a place to watch films. It was a cultural hub. It hosted Spain’s biggest stars including Marisol whose movies premiered here. In the basement a community ballroom added to its allure. There were even plans for a rooftop cinema. Sadly construction issues thwarted this dream.

The years brought changes. Renovations in 1966 and 1983 added more auditoriums. The main auditorium though remained largely intact. For decades the Palacio de la Música shone as a cinematic jewel. But in 2008 its doors closed. The interior threatened to become a shopping mall. A public outcry saved it. The Palacio de la Música lives on. The dream of its restoration as a concert hall endures. A symbol of Madrid’s enduring love for its cultural heritage. A place where music and film continue to echo. A legacy that survives.
