Did the year 1728 hold a special significance for the elegant Pałac Radomierzyce? It certainly did. This was the year of its grand inauguration, a moment that echoed across the region. Pałac Radomierzyce wasn’t just another palace. It was a water palace, a testament to the vision of Joachim Sigismund von Ziegler und Klipphausen, or Jogi as we’ll call him. Jogi, chamberlain to King August II the Strong, envisioned a sanctuary for unmarried noblewomen facing hard times. He poured his heart, and a considerable amount of resources, into creating this haven on an artificial island. The construction, a labor of love spanning nearly two decades, resulted in a magnificent three-wing palace. The surrounding moat, reflecting the palace’s grandeur, added an air of mystique. A meticulously planned garden further enhanced the beauty of Pałac Radomierzyce, while a tree-lined path invited leisurely strolls. The palace wasn’t just a refuge. It was a stage where history played out. During the Seven Years’ War, it hosted the Prussian King Frederick the Great. Later, during the Napoleonic Wars, General Blucher, Prince Wilhelm, and the Lützow Free Corps found quarter within its walls. Among them was Theodor Körner, a dramatist turned soldier. He penned his inspiring “Aufruf” (call to arms) right here at Pałac Radomierzyce, urging Saxons to resist Napoleon. During World War II, the palace served as a shelter for children evacuated from cities. After the war, the redrawing of borders placed Radomierzyce in Poland. The remaining noblewomen were expelled, and the palace suffered looting and decay. A glimmer of hope appeared in 2003 when an investor, dreaming of a hotel and event venue, purchased the palace. Renovations began, breathing new life into the facades and roofs. Sadly, the investor’s untimely death in 2004 halted the project. The Pałac Radomierzyce stands today, a silent witness to centuries of history. It awaits its next chapter, a revival that will allow its story to continue to unfold.
