Pak Kret’s story stretches back to the 18th century. Imagine a time when the Ayutthaya Kingdom ruled. The Chao Phraya River flowed differently then.
Around 1721 to 1722, something remarkable happened. A portion of the Chao Phraya River was excavated. This created a bypass, shaping Ko Kret island. Settlements sprouted near this new canal. They became known as Ban Tret Noi and Ban Pak Tret Noi. These names meant village on the lesser bypass and village on the mouth of the lesser bypass.
Many ethnic Mon communities settled here. This happened from the Ayutthaya period into the early Rattanakosin times. Pak Kret officially became a sanitation district in 1955. This area included Pak Kret District east of the river.
In 1992, Pak Kret transformed into a subdistrict municipality. Later, it gained town status in 1996. Finally, in 2000, it became a city municipality.
As Bangkok grew rapidly, so did Pak Kret. Rice paddies and orchards gave way to housing estates. Today, Pak Kret is a bustling residential and commercial hub. The Pakkret Municipality covers 36.04 square kilometers. It includes 34 villages within five subdistricts. These are Pakkret, Bangpud, Banmai, Bangtalad, and Klongklau.
The municipality shares borders with several areas. Phathumthani Muang District lies to the north. Nonthaburi City Municipality is to the south. Donmuang District in Bangkok is to the east. The Chao Phraya River flows to the west.
Pak Kret’s location on the Chao Phraya River Plain is ideal for agriculture. The area once thrived with fruit orchards. Durian, mangosteen, and bananas were well known.
Convenient transport links define Pak Kret. Chaeng Watthana Road runs east to west. It connects to Bangkok’s Lak Si District. Tiwanon Road links Pak Kret to Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi. These roads intersect at Pak Kret intersection.
Muang Thong Thani is the largest housing estate in Pak Kret. It hosts Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University and Impact. Impact is a large exhibition center complex. Srinagarindra Park and CentralPlaza Chaengwattana are also here.
In 2008, Pak Kret had a population of 167,664 people. There were approximately 91,119 households.
