Whispers of resilience echo around the Pagode Khmer du Canada. This vibrant temple stands as a testament to the strength and spirit of the Cambodian community in Montreal. The Pagode Khmer du Canada isn’t just a building. It’s a living embodiment of hope, rebuilt from the ashes of a devastating fire in 1985. The original structure on Rue de Nancy was small, a residential building transformed into a spiritual sanctuary. After the fire, the community rallied, acquiring three new buildings to create the expanded Pagode Khmer du Canada we see today. Two of these buildings house the monks and the yiey ji, the “grandmothers of the pagoda”. These laywomen dedicate their lives to assisting with ceremonies and observing Buddhist precepts. The third building, extensively renovated in the 1980s, serves as the grand hall. Here, the faithful gather for religious and cultural activities. Every seven or eight days, the thgnai sel, or holy days, are celebrated. The ceremony begins at 8 a.m., culminating in a communal meal around 11 a.m., a tradition where men and women dine separately based on their observed Buddhist precepts. The Pagode Khmer du Canada also hosts vibrant celebrations for Cambodian holidays. The Cambodian New Year, celebrated between April 13th and 16th, is a particularly significant event. The festivities blend religious ceremonies with artistic expressions, including traditional Khmer dances, games, and even karaoke. At the heart of the pagoda’s ceremonies is the Venerable Hok Savann. He arrived in Montreal in the early 1980s, carrying the weight of the Cambodian refugee experience. Ordained at 21, he fled the Khmer Rouge regime, offering solace and guidance in Thai refugee camps. Thanks to the generosity of the Société bouddhiste khmère de Montréal (SBK), he arrived in Quebec in 1981, becoming the first Cambodian monk in the province. He then became president of the SBK. He spearheaded the construction of the Pagode Khmer du Canada, gathering donations from Cambodian communities worldwide. This collective effort transformed a shared dream into a tangible symbol of solidarity. The Pagode Khmer du Canada stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, a testament to a community’s enduring spirit. It reminds us of the power of faith and the importance of preserving cultural heritage, even in the face of adversity.
