Picture a bronze figure standing tall. This is the Padre Américo Statue. It honors a man who dedicated his life to helping those in need.

The Padre Américo Statue was created by Henrique Moreira. It was unveiled in August 1961. The statue stands on a quadrangular plinth made of granite. Its lines are sober but artistic.

Padre Américo was born Américo Monteiro de Aguiar. He was born in Penafiel in 1887. He dedicated himself to helping the most vulnerable. He focused especially on young people. His work led to countless achievements.

He founded the Casa do Gaiato. It was initially called Casa da Colónia. The Casa do Gaiato became his most well-known work.

In 1906, Padre Américo worked in Mozambique. He worked for The British Central Africa company. He also worked for African Lakes. He met Father Rafael Maria da Assunção there. Rafael later became Bishop of Cabo Verde.

In 1923, he returned to Penafiel. He expressed his desire to join a Franciscan convent. He spent nine months studying Latin and science. He spent another year after taking his vows.

He struggled to adapt to monastic life. He left in July 1925. He then tried to enter the seminary of Porto. The Bishop did not approve his request. He contacted the Bishop of Coimbra who accepted him.

After studying Theology, he became a seminary prefect. He also taught Portuguese. He became chaplain in Casais do Campo. He was appointed parish priest in São Paulo de Frades. He never took office due to exhaustion.

In 1932, the Bishop of Coimbra entrusted him with the “Sopa dos Pobres”. This is when he began to reveal his true calling.

In May 1935, he was invited to preach in São Pedro de Alva. He founded the first Casa da Colónia there. In August, he started holiday camps for children in Coimbra. This was the early stage of what would become Casa do Gaiato.

On January 7, 1940, he founded the first Casa do Gaiato. It was located in Miranda do Corvo. The second Casa do Gaiato was in Paço de Sousa. It became a village for young people.

Padre Américo also started the Lar do Gaiato in Porto. He also initiated the construction of houses for the poor.

The Obra da Rua is dedicated to the Holiest Name of Jesus. Its symbol is Quim Mau. He is a boy with open arms asking for love.

The Padre Américo Statue shows him standing tall. Two “gaiatos” or little boys line him. It reminds us of his dedication to children. Countless admirers helped to erect this monument. It stands as a testament to his life’s work.

Padre Américo died in a car accident in 1956. His canonization process began in 1986. He left behind a legacy of compassion and service. The Padre Américo Statue is a tribute to his memory. It inspires us to care for those in need.
