Done in stone, can you sense the echoes of a king’s gratitude resonating around the Padrão de Dom João I? This monument stands as a testament to faith and victory. It marks a pivotal moment in Portuguese history. We are standing before the Padrão de Dom João I. It is also known as the Padrão de Aljubarrota or the Padrão de São Lázaro. This monument commemorates King John I’s entrance into Guimarães. This happened after the triumphant Battle of Aljubarrota.

Legend says that King John I made a promise to Santa Maria de Guimarães. He vowed to honor her if Portugal won the battle. After securing victory, the king fulfilled his vow. He walked barefoot to Guimarães surrounded by his royal court. He expressed his gratitude to Santa Maria. He offered her spoils of war taken from the enemy.

Among these offerings was a golden cord. Its length equaled the distance between this Padrão and the Padrão do Salado. This act of devotion solidified the Padrão de Dom João I as a symbol of royal gratitude. The original monument was erected soon after the battle in 1386. However, the structure we see today dates back to the early 16th century. It was possibly rebuilt following the charter granted by King Manuel I in 1517.

The Padrão de Dom João I showcases late Gothic architecture. Simple steps lead to a central platform. A cross adorned with floral motifs stands proudly. It is carved from Ançã stone. The cross depicts Christ’s crucifixion. Below a canopy, you can see the image of Christ crucified. On the reverse side, the Virgin Mary mourns over the dead Christ.

Throughout the centuries, the Padrão de Dom João I has faced challenges. It needed several restorations to preserve its historical integrity. In 1843, the local council repaired the monument. This was due to its deteriorated condition. In 1863, the monument was slightly moved to align with the road to Famalicão. This was completed in 1864. Further restorations in 1935 and 1979 ensured its continued grandeur. Even acts of vandalism in 1996 prompted additional repairs. Despite these challenges, the Padrão remains resilient.

In July 2024, the cross at the center of the Padrão was vandalized and destroyed. This is a testament to the ongoing need to protect cultural heritage. This monument has been recognized as a national treasure since 1910. It is a reminder of the enduring legacy of Portugal.

As you stand before the Padrão de Dom João I, imagine the king’s solemn procession. Feel the echoes of history. The Padrão de Dom João I is more than just a stone structure. It is a symbol of faith, gratitude, and the enduring spirit of Portugal.
