Established in 1962, the Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg stands before you, a testament to the enduring power of education. This institution, also known as PH Freiburg, wasn’t always the modern hub you see today. It emerged from the union of two denominational academies, Academies I and II for teacher training. Imagine a time when its campus encompassed the former Catholic parish church of Littenweiler, which served first as a large lecture hall and later as a student cafeteria. Picture the Musen Trakt and a gymnasium bustling with around 700 students.

The Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg holds a unique position among Germany’s educational institutions. It’s one of six university-level colleges of education in Baden-Württemberg with the right to award doctoral degrees and habilitations. Its peers are located in Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Ludwigsburg, Weingarten, and Schwäbisch Gmünd. The PH Freiburg’s transformation into a scientific university in 1971 marked a significant step in its evolution. This growth continued with the completion of the fifth Kollegiengebäude (college building) in 1998. In the courtyard of this building, you’ll find the “Gekippter Würfel” (Tilted Cube), a sculpture by Alf Lechner created in 1975. This striking piece has become a symbol of the Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg, representing its dynamic and forward-thinking approach to education.

Fast forward to the winter semester of 2016/17, and the student population had grown to almost 5,000. The university offers a diverse range of study programs, from primary school teaching to vocational school teaching. It also offers bachelor’s and master’s programs in education-related fields, as well as a doctoral program. The university boasts three faculties. The Faculty of Educational Sciences covers areas like educational science, psychology, media in education, and sociology. The Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences encompasses German language and literature, English studies, Romance studies, fine arts, music, theology, and political and historical science. Lastly, the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology covers everyday culture, exercise and health, vocational and business education, biology, chemistry, physics, technology, geography, and mathematics education.

However, even institutions dedicated to shaping the future face challenges. In 2018, the discovery of PCB contamination in the buildings, particularly in the ceilings and partition walls of the Kollegiengebäude, necessitated a significant undertaking. Remediation efforts were initiated, and plans for a new building to serve as temporary accommodation were put in place. This new structure, planned for a meadow near the existing buildings, is intended to be a wooden construction, reflecting the university’s commitment to sustainability. The Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg’s story is one of growth, adaptation, and a steadfast dedication to its mission of educating future generations. It reminds us that even amidst challenges, the pursuit of knowledge and the development of skilled educators remain paramount.
