Founded in 1845 Packer Collegiate Institute stands proudly in Brooklyn Heights. It’s the oldest independent school in Brooklyn a testament to enduring educational excellence. Imagine a time before Brooklyn was even a city. Packer’s story begins then. A group of forward-thinking individuals envisioned a school for girls. They raised funds and established the Brooklyn Female Academy right here on Joralemon Street. The school thrived. Its reputation grew. Then tragedy struck. A devastating fire destroyed the original building on New Year’s Day 1853. But from the ashes a phoenix rose. Harriet L Packer a generous benefactor donated a substantial sum. This was the largest gift ever made to support girls’ education. The school was renamed Packer Collegiate Institute in honor of her late husband. Minard Lafever a prominent Brooklyn architect designed the new building. It opened in 1854. Its chapel boasts stunning Tiffany stained-glass windows. Packer’s history is intertwined with Brooklyn’s growth. It witnessed the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. It educated generations of women. Initially a girls’ school Packer became fully coeducational in 1972. The school has always been at the forefront of innovation. It embraced technology early on implementing a laptop program. Today Packer Collegiate Institute remains a vibrant institution. It blends tradition with progress. It fosters a diverse and supportive community. It continues to challenge students to reach their full potential. It’s a place where students develop talents pursue aspirations and become responsible globally minded citizens. A place where history breathes and the future unfolds. This is Packer Collegiate Institute.
