Gazing westward, Pacific Soul stands as a testament to San Diego’s vibrant spirit. Have you noticed how it seems to welcome everyone? This monumental sculpture is the work of Jaume Plensa. He is an internationally renowned artist.
Pacific Soul graces the public plaza at Pacific Gate by Bosa luxury residences. Its installation in late 2017 marked a significant addition to San Diego’s downtown area. Nat Bosa, president of Bosa Development, envisioned elevating Downtown San Diego onto the international stage. Pacific Soul became the third public installation commissioned by Bosa.
Jaume Plensa drew inspiration from the ocean. He sees it as a connector of the world. He also sees it as a symbol of constant change. He hopes Pacific Soul will be an icon. He wants it to embrace San Diego’s diverse community.
Standing at approximately 25 feet tall, Pacific Soul is composed of characters. These characters come from eight different alphabets. They include Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and Hindi. Plensa uses these alphabets as a metaphor. He joins humanity through art.
Notice the root-like ribbons at the base of Pacific Soul. This is the first public work in the U.S. to incorporate this design element. The sculpture organically develops from these ribbons. Plensa believes language is a self-portrait of a culture.
When darkness falls, Pacific Soul transforms. Lights illuminate the sculpture from below. This allows people to walk through it. Many have walked inside the sculpture. They have looked up at the night sky.
