Beneath our feet lies a silent witness to Oxford’s evolving story Pacey’s Bridge. It carries Park End Street over the Castle Mill Stream. This unassuming bridge has seen centuries of change.

Pacey’s Bridge is part of the Castle Mill Stream story. The Castle Mill Stream itself is a three-mile-long backwater of the River Thames. It loops around the western edge of Oxford. The stream eventually rejoins the main river near Gasworks Bridge.

Let’s journey back to Saxon and early Norman times. Even before Oxford Castle stood tall, a mill existed here. The stream powered its machinery. Imagine the rhythmic churning of the waterwheel. Picture the miller diligently grinding grain.

The Castle Mill Stream played a role in a dramatic escape. During the winter of 1142 Empress Matilda found herself under siege in Oxford Castle. She was daughter of Henry I. She was battling King Stephen for the throne. One snowy night, Matilda’s guards lowered her over the castle walls. Dressed in white, she blended with the snowy landscape. She crept through enemy lines. Matilda crossed the icy Castle Mill Stream. She escaped to freedom. Pacey’s Bridge wasn’t there then but the stream flowed.

In the Middle Ages, the Castle Mill Stream was a vital waterway. Boats navigated it at least as far as Hythe Bridge. The 16th century saw hay, wood, stone, and slate unloaded at Hythe Bridge’s wharf. The stream bustled with commercial activity.

The Oxford Canal changed everything. It offered an easier route into Oxford’s center. In 1795-96, Daniel Harris built Isis Lock. This connected the Thames to the canal wharves. The Castle Mill Stream became less important for navigation.

Today, Pacey’s Bridge stands quietly. However, it is a reminder of Oxford’s layered past. It connects us to millers, escaping empresses, and bustling medieval trade. As you cross Pacey’s Bridge take a moment. Consider the stories flowing beneath your feet along with the Castle Mill Stream. The stream flows under a series of bridges. These include Quaking Bridge and Swan Bridge. These bridges stand outside Oxford’s old city walls near Oxford Castle.
