Did you know that the Palacio de Cristal wasn’t always an art gallery? It has transformed over the years. This stunning glass and metal structure stands as one of Spain’s most beautiful architectural treasures. We are standing in front of the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid’s Retiro Park.
The Palacio de Cristal dates back to the late 19th century. The architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco designed it in 1887. He drew inspiration from London’s Crystal Palace. The Palacio was originally a greenhouse. It showcased exotic flora and fauna during the Exposition of the Philippines. The Philippines was a Spanish colony back then. Hundreds of species imported from across the oceans were housed here.
Look up at the domed roof. It reaches almost 23 meters high. The structure uses more than 14 thousand pieces of glass fitted into an iron framework. This creates a vast transparent space filled with natural light. The cast-iron frame was manufactured in Bilbao. The structure was designed to be re-erected on another site. But the building has remained on its original site. It sits next to a lake. It has been restored to its original appearance.
The Palacio de Cristal gives off a regal air. It resembles a large Gothic cathedral. This is thanks to its cross shape and cupola. Ricardo Velázquez Bosco also helped restore churches. He worked on the famous Cathedrals of Leon and even the Mezquita de Cordoba. You can perhaps feel the influence of these powerful churches in the palace’s design.
In May 1936, the Palacio de Cristal was the site of a parliamentary vote. Manuel Azaña was elected president of the Spanish Republic here. He was the only candidate.
Now, the Palacio de Cristal is managed by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. It hosts temporary art exhibitions. Admission is free. The charm of the Palacio de Cristal is heightened by its location. It stands within the Parque del Buen Retiro. This park dates back to King Felipe IV’s reign. It was once a royal retreat. Now it is a public park. It offers beautiful gardens and monuments. The tranquil Retiro Pond is nearby.
