“This stone holds more than just memories,” the tour guide said, gesturing towards the Oxley Uniting Church. “It represents the faith and dedication of a community.” The Oxley Uniting Church, a beacon of hope and resilience, stands proudly in the heart of Oxley. Its story, however, begins long before the present structure graced this site. The church’s foundation stone, laid on Pentecost Sunday, the 26th of May 1985, whispers tales of the past. It speaks of Reverend Eric Moore, the Queensland Synod Moderator, who unveiled it, and Reverend Burt Johns, whose words from Hebrews 11:1 echoed the spirit of the day. The inscription on the stone serves as a powerful reminder: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Yet, the journey from foundation stone to the place of worship we see today was no small feat. The church, officially opened on the 23rd of August 1987, is a testament to the unwavering faith and commitment of the Oxley community. The plaque near the entrance recounts the dedication ceremony led by Reverend R.F. Hunt, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Rolls, senior members of the congregation. Reverend Burt Johns once again graced the occasion, his words weaving together the threads of faith, hope, and dedication that continue to bind this community. The Oxley Uniting Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the enduring spirit of faith and community, a testament to the power of shared dreams and collective endeavors.
