Who remembers a time before the roar of engines and the thrill of greyhound racing filled the air at Oxford Stadium? This iconic venue, steeped in history and echoing with the cheers of generations, stands as a testament to Oxford’s enduring love for sport and entertainment. Oxford Stadium hasn’t always been about the dogs. Originally envisioned as a multi-purpose venue, the stadium was meant to host football, concerts, and other events. The plans for a grand football stadium, however, were hampered by financial difficulties, leading to its current three-sided structure. The initial construction began in 1996, with the dream of a 16,000-seat stadium. But financial troubles stalled the project in 1997. Work finally resumed in 2000 under new ownership, eventually leading to the opening we celebrate today. The stadium officially opened its doors in 2001, not with a football match as initially intended, but with a friendly between Oxford United and Crystal Palace. Imagine the scene: the brand new stadium, gleaming under the summer sun, the anticipation palpable in the air as the teams took to the pitch. The first competitive match followed a week later, a League match against Rochdale, a moment etched in Oxford United history. Even though Oxford United eventually moved on, Oxford Stadium found its rhythm with greyhound racing, becoming a beloved fixture in the city’s sporting landscape. Interestingly, the stadium was even briefly home to the rugby union club London Welsh from 2012 to 2015. Beyond the sporting arena, Oxford Stadium has played a diverse role in the community. From hosting concerts by the likes of Sir Elton John to serving as a vaccination centre during the COVID-19 pandemic, this venue has proven its adaptability and importance to the city. There’s a rather peculiar tale associated with the stadium. Following a string of losses by Oxford United in their early days at the stadium, rumors of a gypsy curse began to circulate. The story goes that a Roma man, evicted from the site during construction, placed a curse on the club. It’s said that the then Bishop of Oxford even performed an exorcism to lift the supposed curse! Whether you believe in curses or not, it’s a fascinating anecdote that adds a touch of mystery to Oxford Stadium’s rich tapestry of stories.
