From a single room to a sprawling institution, the story of Oxford Brookes University is one of remarkable growth. Oxford Brookes University started humbly in 1865 as the Oxford School of Art. It occupied just one room within the Taylor Institution at St Giles, Oxford. Imagine the contrast between that single room and the vibrant campuses we see at Oxford Brookes University today. In 1870, the School of Science joined, broadening the institution’s reach. By 1891, under the city council’s administration, it became the Oxford City Technical School, encompassing the still distinct School of Art. The institution continued to evolve, merging the School of Art and Technical School in 1934. John Henry Brookes, a pivotal figure in the school’s history, became the first principal of the newly formed Schools of Technology, Art, and Commerce. Oxford Brookes University owes its name to this visionary leader. By 1950, the institution, bursting at the seams with 4,000 students, found a new home thanks to the Morrell brewing family. The Oxford College of Technology, as it was then known, opened on its new site in 1956. Fast forward to 1970, and the college transformed into Oxford Polytechnic. Then, in 1992, a landmark moment: it achieved university status and adopted the name Oxford Brookes University. The university now boasts four faculties: Oxford Brookes Business School, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Technology, Design and Environment. Interestingly, in 2003, Oxford Brookes University achieved a global first, becoming the first university worldwide to be awarded Fairtrade status. This reflects the university’s commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. Today, Oxford Brookes University stands as a testament to the vision of John Henry Brookes, a place where education is accessible to all, continuing its journey of growth and transformation.
