The OVO Hydro’s story began with a vision. The Scottish Event Campus needed a new, larger arena. The existing Concert Hall 4 within the SEC was too small. It could not host large-scale events. The decision was made to build an alternative arena.
Construction on the OVO Hydro started in February 2011. It officially opened on September 30, 2013. Rod Stewart christened the stage with a memorable concert. The arena has undergone name changes due to sponsorship. It was initially named The Scottish Hydro Arena. Later it was known as The SSE Hydro. In October 2021, it became the OVO Hydro. This change reflected a new partnership with OVO Energy. The focus shifted towards sustainability.
The OVO Hydro stands proudly between the SEC Centre and the SEC Armadillo. Foster + Partners designed this architectural marvel. The arena boasts a capacity of up to 14,300. This makes it one of the UK’s largest venues.

The OVO Hydro has hosted many world-renowned artists. Rod Stewart was followed by Bruno Mars, Beyonce, and Justin Timberlake. Taylor Swift, U2, and Madonna have also graced its stage. Janet Jackson and Alice Cooper also rocked at OVO Hydro.
But the OVO Hydro is more than just a concert venue. It has hosted major sporting events. Netball and gymnastics events were held here during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The UFC held its first Scottish event here. The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships also took place at the OVO Hydro. WWE hosted Clash at the Castle in June 2024.
The OVO Hydro has also played a role in film. It was used for exterior shots in the movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. In 2014, it hosted Scotland Decides: The Big, Big Debate. This was the largest televised debate in Scottish history.
In 2016, the OVO Hydro ranked as the eighth-busiest music arena globally. It continues to attract over one million visitors annually. It is a regular feature in the top ten arenas worldwide.
The OVO Hydro faced a challenge during its construction. In June 2013, a fire broke out on the domed roof. Welding work caused the flames. Forty firefighters tackled the blaze. Despite the setback, the arena opened on schedule.
