Picture this. You’re standing at Overpeck Marine Park. A vast expanse of green unfolds before you. This isn’t just any park. Overpeck County Park boasts a rich history. It started over 50 years ago. Five Bergen County towns donated land. Some of that land was a former landfill. Now Overpeck County Park stretches over 805 acres. It’s a premier recreational destination.

Overpeck Marine Park offers a lot more than meets the eye. It features multiple athletic fields. There are picnic areas and fishing spots. Families can enjoy the children’s playground. Adventurous souls can launch canoes and kayaks into Overpeck Creek. The 3000-seat amphitheater hosts events. There are miles of walking and biking trails.

But the story goes deeper. The Teaneck Creek section of Overpeck County Park has a fascinating past. For centuries it was drained and developed. In the early 1900s it was almost a landfill. Clay was even added as a base liner. Although the landfill was never built the clay remains. In 1951 Teaneck transferred the land to Bergen County.

The disruption caused by human activity had consequences. Invasive plant species took over. However a massive restoration effort began in 2020. Bergen County removed invasive plants. They reintroduced tens of thousands of native plants. They even built a regenerative stormwater conveyance system. The first in New Jersey.

The first phase was finished in 2022. Wildlife is already returning. The park is continuing to improve. The Bergen County Parks Department is fighting invasive species. They are also planning enhancements. These include accessible trails eco-art installations and wildlife viewing areas.

Overpeck County Park is more than just a recreational space. It’s a testament to environmental restoration. It’s also a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a place where community comes together. Come explore this amazing park. Discover the beauty and resilience of Overpeck Marine Park.
