In 1888, a simple act of kindness sparked the beginning of Overbrook Presbyterian Church. Wistar Morris, a Quaker, envisioned a place of worship for the Scotch-Irish immigrants working on his farm. He opened his living room to a small group, and together they dreamed. Just a year later, in 1889, that dream took shape at the corner of two dirt roads, City and Lancaster Avenues. A charming English Gothic chapel arose, costing a mere $14,767. Overbrook Presbyterian Church was initially a country church. But the burgeoning city of Philadelphia quickly enveloped it. The planned community of Overbrook Farms sprung up in the 1890s, bringing new residents who found their spiritual home at Overbrook Presbyterian Church. The church expanded in 1905, creating the larger sanctuary still in use today. Overbrook Presbyterian Church’s mission extended far beyond its local community. In 1903, driven by compassion, the church established a hospital in Siam, now Chiang Rai, Thailand. Overbrook Hospital continues to serve the community today. The church thrived under the leadership of Reverend George Emerson Barnes, who served from 1922 to 1948. He guided the congregation through the tumultuous times of the Great Depression and World War II. His involvement in the ecumenical movement was pivotal, contributing to the founding of the World Council of Churches. Education became a cornerstone of Overbrook Presbyterian Church’s mission during Reverend Robert T. Williamson’s tenure from 1959 to 1970. A small weekday preschool was established, which has now blossomed into a renowned institution with 150 students. Overbrook Presbyterian Church embraced the changing demographics of the neighborhood in the 1960s, opening its doors to all. In 1968, Betty Clayton became the first African-American member, marking a significant step towards inclusivity. Overbrook Presbyterian Church has continued to champion urban ministry and diversity. The church’s commitment to social justice was evident even on the tragic day of the 2024 fire. The eighth annual Memorial to the Lost, commemorating victims of gun violence, was being hosted. This commitment speaks to the heart of Overbrook Presbyterian Church, a church not confined by its walls, but one that actively engages with the world. From a simple gathering in a Quaker’s living room, Overbrook Presbyterian Church has become a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
