Right here, in the heart of Philadelphia, stands a symbol of courage and sacrifice – the Over the Top Doughboy Statue. It doesn’t look like the typical statue, all grand and polished. It’s a little rough around the edges, weathered by time and the elements. But that roughness tells a story.

This bronze figure of a WWI Doughboy, named Over the Top, is a tribute to the soldiers from the River Wards who served in the Great War. He’s frozen in a moment of action, rifle with bayonet in hand, ready to charge forward. He’s not standing in a triumphant pose, but rather a determined one, with a slight tilt to his head, as the artist, John Paulding, wanted to depict the grit of the soldiers.

The statue is more than just a piece of art. It’s a testament to the bravery and commitment of the soldiers who went “over the top” into the trenches. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices they made for our freedom. This Doughboy doesn’t just commemorate the past, but also reminds us of the value of service and dedication.

The statue was meant to be a reminder, but after many years, it started to crumble. The plaque honoring the soldiers, with the names of those who served, was even stolen. But, the community wouldn’t let this symbol of their neighborhood be lost. It was restored to its former glory with the names of the 400 soldiers now back in their rightful place on the plaque.

The inscription on the granite pedestal is simple but powerful: “IN MEMORY OF OUR BOYS OF THE SIXTH, ELEVENTH, AND TWELFTH WARDS WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR OF THE NATIONS, 1914 – 1918.” Every time you pass by the Over the Top Doughboy Statue, remember the sacrifice of those who were willing to give so much for our nation.
