Our Saviour Lutheran Church

Why did seventy-one souls brave the Salt Lake City winter in 1960? They gathered to officially charter Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Our Saviour Lutheran Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith. It’s a story of growth, resilience, and a deep commitment to community. Our Saviour Lutheran Church, nestled in Holladay, Utah, first opened its doors as a small congregation in 1960. These charter members, with names like Hauffmann, Rasmussen, and Olason, laid the foundation for what the church is today. The church’s early days were a struggle. Pastor Fred Henkel, who initiated the survey for the church back in 1958, saw the congregation hold its first services in the East Millcreek Gymnasium. The church’s official charter, with its seventy-one founding members, was a beacon of hope. Pastor A.E. Cox, the first pastor called to serve the fledgling church, began his ministry in 1960. He, like the pastors who followed, faced the challenge of building a spiritual home in a predominantly Mormon city. The arrival of two large companies brought an influx of non-Mormons to Salt Lake City, breathing new life into Our Saviour Lutheran Church. The congregation expanded rapidly, necessitating the construction of its first building on 3900 South. The original west wing served as the sanctuary. The smaller south wing housed the classrooms. The church continued to grow. In 1974, a new building was added, featuring a narthex, offices, a sacristy, and a larger sanctuary. Another expansion in 1990 doubled the size of the south wing. This addition provided much-needed classroom and meeting space. A full-sized kitchen was installed and the west wing was remodeled. Our Saviour Lutheran Church stands as a symbol of perseverance and community.
