“Join us,” the sign seems to whisper as we approach Our Saviors Lutheran Church. This isn’t just a church. It’s a community cornerstone with a fascinating story. Our Saviors Lutheran Church has stood here at 4011 Ohio St. in San Diego since the 1930s.

Before this location, the church started in 1915. Back then, it was part of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. It stood at Park Boulevard and Centre Street. Imagine services accompanied by a pump organ and a piano bought for only $100. By 1921, English sermons began to appear.

The church expanded over the years. It even bought four adjacent lots including apartments. In 1959, Our Saviors Lutheran Church boasted almost 1300 members. Today, like many churches nationwide, the membership has decreased. But the sense of family remains strong.

Our Saviors Lutheran Church has also helped establish other Lutheran churches in San Diego County. These include La Jolla Lutheran, College Lutheran, and Lemon Grove Lutheran. This shows the church’s impact on the wider community.

Step inside the sanctuary. Notice the broad pews and the long aisle. The altar is framed by rich wood. Stained glass adorns the side windows. Behind the altar, a depiction of Christ praying inspires reverence. The tall, arched ceiling amplifies this feeling of contemplation.

The church provides more than just a worship space. The campus includes a secure courtyard and gardens. There is also a library, offices, a preschool, and a full kitchen. A fellowship hall hosts annual meetings. It even hosts martial arts, quinceanera parties, and weekly square dancing.

The preschool has existed since 1980. It welcomes children aged two to four. The staff plans thematic activities, crafts, and walking trips. Sometimes, special guests visit. Firemen, postmen, and even Santa Claus have thrilled the children. Our Saviors Lutheran Church preschool consistently has a waiting list.

Pastor Maria Santa Cruz leads services in both Spanish and English. Her sermons encourage reflection and fellowship. Many stay after church for free bread and homemade Mexican brunch.

Today, Our Saviors Lutheran Church welcomes everyone. It embraces all races, colors, and sexual orientations. The church offers bilingual worship services every Sunday at 11:00 am. The services last about 90 minutes. The services are led by Pastor Maria Santa Cruz. The readings are in both Spanish and English. Hymns are sung in both languages. Ken Herman plays the organ, and Gabriel Millan plays the piano. They accompany the choir and congregation.

Communion is celebrated with whole wheat wafers and red wine. Gluten-free wafers and juice are available upon request. After the service, coffee and pastries are offered in the courtyard.

Our Saviors Lutheran Church overcame language and cultural barriers. It provides a place for joy, grace, and forgiveness. It is a testament to community and enduring faith. Its 100-year celebration highlighted its rich history and bright future. Our Saviors Lutheran Church is more than a building. It is a family.
