Unexpectedly Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in Oak Park Michigan wasn’t always one. It’s a story of mergers and resilience. Originally two separate parishes Our Lady of Fatima and St James existed side by side. Our Lady of Fatima boasted humble beginnings. Masses were first held in a small wooden schoolhouse. The first church building a rectory was built in 1950.Tragedy struck in 1956 a devastating fire destroyed the church. Undeterred they rebuilt. A new church was constructed and the first Mass was celebrated on Christmas Eve 1957.

Meanwhile St James Parish in Ferndale had its own unique history. Established in 1919 its first Mass was held in a school classroom. Believe it or not early services were even held in a chicken coop. The first proper church was built in 1920. A school followed in 1923. The current church building a testament to community spirit was constructed in 1950.

In 2012 the two parishes Our Lady of Fatima and St James became cluster parishes. This wasn’t merely a union. It was a coming together of two rich histories and communities. In 2014 they officially merged creating Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish. The first Mass of the unified parish took place at Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Sadly in 2024 a decision was made to close St James Church. The closing Mass marked the end of an era. It was a bittersweet moment for the community. But it also served as a reminder of the parish’s enduring faith. The legacy of St James lives on in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish.
