Whispers of faith echo within the hallowed halls of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Here, at 5930 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, stands a testament to resilience and transformation. Our Lady of the Rosary wasn’t always Catholic. It began its life as St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church. Construction started in 1893, culminating in 1896 with the completion of a grand Romanesque Revival structure. The architects, Malcomson and Higginbotham, crafted a masterpiece of rock-faced sandstone, crowned with cross-gabled roofs. Two towers flank the façade: a tall, square, pyramid-roofed tower to the south, and a round, conical-roofed tower on the north. A large rose window graces the entrance vestibule, nestled between these imposing sentinels. In 1906, St. Joseph’s merged with St. Paul’s Cathedral. The building found new life in 1907 when Father Francis J. VanAntwerp purchased it. Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church was born. The congregation made their mark, extending the nave and placing a magnificent gilded statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary atop the south tower. Fast forward to 2021, and Our Lady of the Rosary embraced a new role. It became the home of the Detroit Catholic Campus Ministry, serving nearby universities. This includes Wayne State University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, the College for Creative Studies, and Henry Ford College. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a symbol of the ever-evolving tapestry of Detroit. It reminds us that even amidst change, the spirit of community and devotion can endure.
