Didn’t Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church start as an extension of Our Lady of Sorrows in 1958? It did. The decision was made to create its own building. A church family began. Now, Our Lady of St. John stands as a spiritual hub. It serves the local community of Houston, Texas.

Sixty years after its founding, Our Lady of St. John has approximately 800 registered parishioners. These parishioners come from 300 families. Many are predominately Hispanic. Father Edwin Coreas is the third pastor at Our Lady of St. John. He has been leading the congregation for more than 17 years. His church community has created a welcoming environment. Father Coreas says they are not a large or wealthy congregation. But they are rich in spirit. They are filled with a sense of community. Their hearts rejoice every time they are together. Parishioners stand at the church’s entrances. They welcome everyone before the Masses. They reach out to first-time visitors. There is almost always someone new at Mass. Father Coreas has brought together a group of parishioners. They are strategizing a plan. They want to add social life activities at the parish. The team is discussing sports programs for children and adults. They are considering games with piñatas and Zumba fitness classes. Other fun activities are also being considered.
Our Lady of St. John also offers Bible study classes on Wednesdays. There is a two-month course on learning how to pray. Portions of Scripture are prayed one line at a time. On the first Friday evening of every month, a group gathers. Approximately 50 people attend at 8 p.m. They have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament through the night. There is a final blessing at 6 a.m. Saturday morning. They pray for intentions. Parishioners placed these intentions in a box at the previous weekend’s Masses.
Devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary are extremely important. Our Lady of Guadalupe is especially revered. Every Sunday, one family takes home an image of Our Lady of St. John. They set an altar for her at their home. They commit to pray the Rosary every day as a family. This meditation is on the life of Christ. The emphasis is on Mary’s focus on Christ. It is a key part of faith formation within families.
