Gazing at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, have you ever wondered about its vibrant history in East Harlem? This church, affectionately called the “Madonna of East Harlem,” isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the faith and dedication of Italian immigrants. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church was built in 1884 by Reverend Emil Kirner. Initially, mass was held on East 111th Street. The church’s official address is 448 East 116th Street, but its entrance is tucked away on East 115th Street, just off Pleasant Avenue. The church’s construction cost $40,000, a substantial sum in those days. It finally opened its doors on August 7, 1887. Our Lady of Mount Carmel became a beacon for Italian and Bohemian communities. It was the second Italian parish in New York City and the very first for Southern Italians. The heart of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church is a treasured statue of the Virgin Mary. It arrived from Polla, Salerno, Italy, thanks to Antonio Petrucci, an Italian immigrant and saloon owner. This statue replaced a simple poster, becoming a focal point for the growing devotion to Our Lady. The annual feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, first celebrated on July 16, 1881, transformed into a major East Harlem event, drawing over 100,000 attendees. The church’s cornerstone was laid on September 20, 1884. Later, a school and gymnasium were added on September 1, 1965. The crowning of the Virgin Mary statue took place on July 10, 1904. This act, authorized by Pope Leo XIII and later confirmed by Pope Pius X, solidified the church’s importance. Pius X even donated an emerald for the crown. The second weekend of August sees the streets around Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church come alive. The Giglio Society of East Harlem hosts a vibrant Italian festival, a tradition stretching back over 125 years. Since 2013, Polish Pallottine fathers have cared for the parish. Today, mass is offered in English, Spanish, Polish, Haitian Creole, and Latin, a testament to the church’s ever-evolving community. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church remains a powerful symbol of faith, community, and tradition, a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of East Harlem.
