A humble peasant, Juan Diego, encountered the Virgin Mary. This wasn’t just any encounter. Our Lady requested a church be built in her honor on that very spot. Juan Diego, tasked with this divine mission, faced resistance from the skeptical Bishop Zumarraga. The bishop demanded proof, a sign of the apparition’s authenticity. After several attempts, Our Lady provided the miraculous sign. She gave Juan Diego Castilian roses, flowers not native to Mexico, especially in December. She instructed him to present these roses to the bishop in his tilma. When Juan Diego opened his tilma before the bishop, the roses tumbled out. Revealed on the tilma was a miraculously imprinted image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This image became an iconic symbol of faith and hope. Our Lady of Guadalupe became the patroness of the Americas.
