Beneath this sacred ground lies a hangar’s humble beginning. Our Lady of Grace Church started in an unexpected place. In 1953 Bishop Charles F. Buddy authorized the founding of a new parish. He appointed Rev. Lucian Lauerman as pastor. The designated area was Fletcher Hills.

Father Lauerman had three location options. He desired the Fletcher family airstrip. The airstrip had a hangar. The hangar could be used for services. This was until a permanent church was built. Father Lauerman placed two medals. He put a Miraculous Medal of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the ground at one end. He placed a St. Joseph Medal at the other end. He prayed daily. He hoped the Blessed Sacrament would be enthroned on an altar there.

May 30, 1954 marked a special day. Mass was celebrated with the hangar doors wide open. Winter approached. The men of the parish built a homely addition. It served until 1957. That year the first permanent church was completed. It is now Lauerman Hall. The school was also completed in 1957. Sisters of the Precious Blood staffed it.

Our Lady of Grace Church began to grow. The first permanent church seated 250. By 1965 the parish had over 1000 families. Planning for the current church began.

November 22, 1970 was a momentous occasion. The current church was dedicated. That same year the Sisters of Mercy of Tuame took over the school.

Our Lady of Grace started as a community of faith. People were loving and caring. They were committed to discipleship and Catholic formation. Present-day parish families continue that legacy. The buildings are not the church. We are the church. Through stewardship service and lifelong learning we are Christ’s hands and feet.

Today Our Lady of Grace offers many ministries. The Youth Ministry builds disciples for Christ. They equip young people to share their faith. Liturgical ministries involve many people. They assist with music altar service and reading. Service ministries such as the food pantry help the community. The Holiday Angel Program supports families in need. The Prayer Quilt Ministry provides comfort.

The church and Blessed Sacrament Adoration Chapel are open daily. They welcome personal or family prayer. Weekly liturgies offer several opportunities to worship. Penance and reconciliation are available.

Our Lady of Grace Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living community. It’s a place where faith is nurtured. It’s a place where service is a way of life. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. The story of Our Lady of Grace is one of humble beginnings. It’s also a story of steadfast devotion. It’s a beacon of hope. It is a place where all are welcome.
