Standing right here in front of Our Lady of Good Counsel, it’s hard to imagine that this magnificent church was only built in 1942. The red brick facade and the towering belltower give the building a sense of history that belies its age. It all started just after the Second World War, a time when Ireland was still trying to heal. As Dublin was growing at a rapid pace, a decision was made to establish a new parish in Drimnagh, a neighborhood that was rapidly expanding with newly built homes. In 1943 the parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel was born, and its heart was this incredibly beautiful church. The church was designed byAshlin and Coleman, two architects who were at the forefront of church architecture in Ireland at the time. The pair went for a blend of the traditional and the modern, using traditional materials like red brick and granite, but also incorporating contemporary elements like flat roofs and a simple, elegant design. The church is a real testament to their vision and to the optimism of the time. They used this opportunity to create a building that reflected the aspirations and the spirit of this new community. The parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel has thrived ever since. It’s evident in the bustling activity around this church, the school next door, and the numerous local groups that call this parish home. The church is a reminder of the enduring power of faith, community, and hope.
