Beneath the square tower holding two bells lies a story of compromise. This is Our Lady of Fatima Church Macau. It is more than just a place of worship. It embodies architectural ingenuity and community spirit.

Our Lady of Fatima Church Macau stands in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima area. This is the northernmost parish in Macau. The church’s story began in 1965. Bishop Dom Paulo Tavares commissioned a design for a church and school. They were meant for adjacent sites.

However, one site became unavailable. Architect Antonio M. Jorge da Silva proposed a solution. He suggested building the school below the church. This meant more steps to access the church. But the bishop approved. The project had to be low cost.

To save money, the structural beams were inverted. They were placed on the roof. This freed the interior ceiling from beams. The church was built with two colors of concrete. This avoided future painting. Black cement made the beams and panels medium grey. The curved panels over the windows are almost white.

Our Lady of Fatima Church Macau was completed in 1968. It was inaugurated on December 7. The church holds regular masses in Cantonese. These masses are usually in the morning.

Our Lady of Fatima has a wider significance. The Catholic Church celebrates Our Lady of Fatima every May 13. This commemorates the apparition in Fatima Portugal in 1917. The Lady asked for daily Rosary recitations. These were for sinners’ repentance and world peace.

Macau’s “Feast and Novena of Our Lady of Fatima” started in 1929. The “Procession of Our Lady of Fatima” is an Intangible Cultural Heritage. It was added to the list in 2019. Many Catholics come to Macau. They participate in this important event.

Jesuits Pe. António Roliz and Pe. António Maria Alves promoted the devotion. The first procession started at St. Dominic’s Church. It went to the Cathedral. Then it passed Senado Square. Finally, it returned to St. Dominic’s Church. Parishioners recited the Rosary. They sang Marian songs. The “Congregation of Our Lady of Fatima” was established. It ensured the annual procession continued.

In 1930, the devotion became a Novena. The route changed to end at the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha. Initially in Portuguese, it became bilingual in 1978. It is now in Chinese and Portuguese. During World War II, the procession continued. More people prayed for peace.

The Procession of Our Lady of Fatima has nearly a century of history in Macau. It builds identity for the Diocese of Macau faithful. It expresses Christian faith uniquely. Our Lady of Fatima Church Macau is a testament to faith. It showcases architectural innovation. It also embodies Macau’s rich cultural heritage.
