A beautiful statue from Portugal stands proudly. This is Our Lady of Fatima Church in Chennai. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith and history.
Our Lady of Fatima Church began humbly. It started as a small substation of St Francis Xavier’s Church in Pallavaram. Father Joseph Nazarene Rodriguez built the initial church in 1936. Bishop Querreiro blessed it in 1937.
Father Nazarene’s ministry in Tambaram blossomed. In 1942 Tambaram became its own parish. He became the first parish priest. The church’s stunning Fatima statue arrived from Portugal. It remains a focal point today.
Over the years the church grew. Father C J Mani started a school in 1960. Father Joseph Thyparambil introduced Small Christian Communities. Father K J Francis built the current church and presbytery. He was beloved by parishioners.
Following the creation of the Chengelpet Diocese in 2002 Father E Arulappa became parish priest. He’d recently returned from Fatima Portugal. He had a vision to renovate the grotto. He also started a monthly novena. He upgraded the school and built the adoration chapel. He also renovated the church floor.
Father A Arulraj continued the good work. He expanded the school and the gardens. He established a Bible bank. This promoted Bible reading during services. Our Lady of Fatima Church is more than a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community center. It’s a symbol of faith. It’s a place where generations have found solace and hope. The legacy of Our Lady of Fatima Church continues.
