Gazing up at Our Lady of Egypt Church Kalina, imagine the wild, untamed landscape of 17th-century Kalina. Back then, it wasn’t the bustling Mumbai suburb we know. It was a wilderness known as Kole Kalyan. Our Lady of Egypt Church Kalina stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Its story begins in 1606. Portuguese missionaries, led by Father Manoel de Mathias, journeyed along the Mithi River, bringing Christianity to this area. They baptized locals and established this very church. Our Lady of Egypt Church Kalina wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. It began humbly, then saw renovations in 1898 and a major reconstruction in 1960. Through it all, it has remained a spiritual haven, first for the small villages of Sahar and Vakola, and now for over 12,000 parishioners. Attending a service here today, you can choose from Marathi, English, and even a special children’s mass. The current parish priest, as of 2024, is Father John Lopes. He follows Father Rui Comelo, who led the parish from 2018 to 2024. Our Lady of Egypt Church Kalina has witnessed centuries of change, from wilderness to bustling city. It stands as a beacon of faith, connecting the past to the present, reminding us of the enduring spirit of devotion.
