Doesn’t the name ‘Kandivali’ sound charming? It conjures images of a peaceful village. Well, long ago, Kandivli was exactly that – a quaint village enveloped by lush greenery and paddy fields. Our Lady of Assumption Church, standing here since 1861, has witnessed Kandivli’s transformation. It has seen the little village grow into a bustling Mumbai suburb. This church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, holding within its walls centuries of history. Before its construction, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption stood here as early as 1560. This chapel fell under the jurisdiction of the Magatana church, erected by local Catholics in 1630. Later, in 1777, the Magatana parish merged with the parish of Poisur, shifting the chapel’s authority to Our Lady of Remedies at Poisur. The year 2011 marked a grand celebration – the sesquicentennial jubilee of Our Lady of Assumption Church. The church commemorated this milestone by renovating its cemetery and launching a website, chronicling its rich history and the legacy of Christians in the area. If these walls could talk, they would narrate tales of faith, transformation, and the enduring spirit of Kandivali’s Christian community.
