Ever notice the yellow church with the tall steeple? That’s Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in San Diego. It stands proudly in Sherman Heights.

Our Lady of Angels originated in 1905. The cornerstone was laid on July 19, 1906. It became the second Catholic parish in San Diego.

Rev. William Quinlan came from Los Angeles to build it. The first Mass was held on Christmas Day 1906. Less than forty families attended before pews were installed.

The church has a rich history. Irish families greatly influenced the early years. Later, Hispanic families shaped it too. The Irish brought their devotion. The Hispanics contributed strong family unity. Today, Our Lady of Angels is a blend of cultures. It reflects the universal church.

Our Lady of Angels is known for its Gothic Revival architecture. Some say it looks like an angular yellow rocket.

The parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe started as a mission of Our Lady of Angels. Many Mexicans crossed the border. They settled in the southern part of the parish. The pastor requested a special mission for them. Thus, Our Lady of Guadalupe was founded.

The early parishioners had a responsibility. They had to give thanks to God. They had to keep the church healthy. They had to ensure continuous growth. Current parishioners have a similar duty. We owe gratitude to those who came before us. Their hard work created this wonderful parish.

Let’s appreciate the beauty of Our Lady of Angels. Remember its history. Consider the people who built it. Honor their dedication. As you leave, reflect on the blend of cultures that make Our Lady of Angels unique.
