Is it a palace for Our Lady, the Help of Christians? Well, not exactly a palace, but certainly a place that speaks to her importance. Right now, you’re standing before Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Hendra. This church has a charming history. It all began in 1928 with a rather unusual purchase: a sprawling old house that once belonged to the Bowman family. This grand but dilapidated residence, sitting on three acres of land, became the first temporary church for the parish. The first Mass was held here on June 9, 1929, marking the beginning of a new spiritual home for the Catholic community. Imagine, for over a decade, this house served a dual purpose. It wasn’t just a place of worship. It was also Our Lady Help of Christians School. Every weekend, a transformation took place as school desks were swapped for church pews, and vice versa. It’s a testament to the dedication and resourcefulness of the early parishioners. Today, Our Lady Help of Christians stands as a testament to that early dedication, a beacon of faith built on the foundation of that humble old house.
