“A chilling premonition,” Otto Grüneberg muttered, clutching the crumpled threat in his hand. He paused at the corner of Schlossstraße and Hebbelstraße, the bustling Berlin street scene fading into a blur as the words echoed in his mind. We stand now before the Otto Grüneberg Plaque, a stark marble reminder of a life cut short by the rising tide of fascism. The plaque, located on Schlossstraße, marks the spot where Otto Grüneberg, a young antifascist activist, was murdered on February 1, 1931. Otto, a member of the “Rote Jungfront,” the communist youth organization, and the “Rote Hilfe,” dedicated himself to protecting his community, the “Red Kiez,” from the escalating violence of the SA. He was also a member of the “Libertas” workers’ sports club, known for his Jiu-Jitsu skills. On that fateful evening, returning from an International Workers’ Aid meeting, he encountered the notorious “Mord-Sturm,” SA-Sturm 33. He was caught in a crossfire. He died shortly after in the “Wascher” pub, now known as “Kastanie,” located on the ground floor of his apartment building at Schlossstraße 22. The threats Otto received stemmed from his impending testimony in a trial against Nazis who had fatally stabbed a worker named Max Schirmer. His murder became a rallying cry against SA terror, with thousands attending his funeral in protest. The main culprit in his murder, Paul Foyer, received a mere five years and four months, while others received even lighter sentences. All were released after just ten months. The Otto Grüneberg Plaque serves not only as a memorial to his individual sacrifice but also as a symbol of the struggle against fascism in pre-war Berlin. The Otto Grüneberg-Weg, a small private street between Schloss- and Hebbelstraße, further commemorates his name. His story also lives on in Jan Petersen’s novel “Unsere Straße,” a literary tribute translated into twelve languages. Otto Grüneberg’s courage resonates here, a stark reminder of the cost of fighting for one’s beliefs.
