Ottmarshausen

Hidden within the gentle embrace of the Schmutter River, Ottmarshausen whispers tales of time. Ottmarshausen first appeared in historical records back in the 12th century. But the story of Ottmarshausen begins much earlier. In 1970, during demolition work on the old St. Vitus Church, remnants of a wooden predecessor emerged. This ancient structure dated back to the 9th or 10th century. Imagine the families who worshipped within those timber walls. Ottmarshausen’s history is a tapestry woven with the threads of prominent families. Names like Langenmantel, Walter, Sulzer, Rehlinger, and Herwarth all played a part in shaping this village’s destiny. The ownership of Ottmarshausen, including its church and surrounding lands, passed through these families like a treasured heirloom. In 1567, Johann Paul Herwarth sold Ottmarshausen to Anton Fugger. Around 1600, it was acquired by the Paler family. Through marriage, Ottmarshausen returned to the Sulzer family. Finally, in 1698, Wolfgang Anton Langenmantel purchased Ottmarshausen for the substantial sum of 26,754 Gulden. In 1806, Ottmarshausen boasted a castle, a mill, and 53 hearths, the heart of each home. By 1858, the village had grown to 65 houses, 72 families, and 314 inhabitants. The parish also included the nearby settlement of Hammel. Today, Ottmarshausen remains a vibrant part of Neusäß, carrying its rich history into the modern age. The modern St. Vitus Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this community. A small park now occupies the site of the original wooden church. It’s a peaceful place to reflect on the centuries of stories held within Ottmarshausen’s heart.
