In 1796, a grand mansion arose in Bowdoin Square, a beacon of the Federal style. This is the Otis House Museum, a testament to the architectural genius of Charles Bulfinch. He designed it for Harrison Gray Otis, a prominent politician, and his wife, Sally. Imagine the elegant couple, standing on the steps of their newly built home, the very first three-story brick house of its kind in Boston. Otis House Museum exhibits the refined taste of the era. Its interiors, inspired by Robert Adam, showcase delicate details and graceful proportions. The Otis family, however, only enjoyed their stylish home for a short time. Just four years later, they moved to a larger mansion on Beacon Hill. Otis House Museum then witnessed a fascinating evolution, reflecting the changing fortunes of its neighborhood. It served as a women’s clinic offering alternative medicines, and later, a boarding house for the middle class. Originally situated closer to Cambridge Street, the house had to be moved in the 1920s when the street was widened. This move, while saving the house from demolition, unfortunately resulted in the loss of the original cellar. Now the headquarters of Historic New England, Otis House Museum stands as a poignant reminder of Boston’s past. It is a survivor of urban renewal, a witness to the rise and fall of Bowdoin Square’s fortunes. Within its walls, it holds not just the story of a prominent family, but also the echoes of a vanished neighborhood.
